General oil questions

One drop of oil is just as, or even more moisturizing, than one pump of cream! Think of how much you'd save on your skincare if you switched to oils instead!

Creams typically consist of 60-70% water, 5-10% oils, and numerous other ingredients in trace amounts. Your skin produces oil for moisture and wants more of the right oil. Why are you giving it 40 ingredients in your face cream instead?

Because creams are mostly water, the water content delivered by the cream initially would have provided some hydration to the skin, but evaporates quickly, which is why you'd have to reapply cream over and over throughout the day. However, oils don't need to be reapplied as frequently since they resist evaporation, and will act as a breathable film to help seal in moisture, and protect your skin from the elements!

All of our oils are formulated only using natural or naturally derived ingredients! Our flagship oil blends are made of only the most luxurious, premium organic plant oils in high ratios not found in most other skincare products on the market. Our ingredients all comply with ECOCERT's standard on natural ingredients.

Meticulously Designed: Through extensive research and testing of over 200 different plant oils, Co-founders Joyce, a certified Cosmetic Chemist, and her sister Jenny have created powerful blends of face oils that leave your skin healthy and glowing.

Non-Greasy & Quick-Absorbing: Unlike other oils on the market which feel greasy and sticky, ours leaves you feeling velvety soft! Try and feel the difference for yourself!

Customized & Specialized: Through a deep understanding of each plant oil's unique properties and textures, we've created six different blends of oils for the face, one for the body, and one for hair! Each of our oil blends features distinctly different plant oils, and works together to deliver effective results!

Our oils feature subtle scents that are not overpowering or artificial smelling.

We do not use any synthetic fragrances in our products. We use small quantities of essential oils in our formulations, which provide both therapeutic benefits and a pleasant aroma. Each oil blend has been formulated by a certified Cosmetic Chemist, and all essential oils used are within safety limits. If you have any known sensitivities, please review our ingredients list and perform a patch test before use.

Our all-natural oil blends contain only pure, luxurious, premium-grade plant oils, vitamin E, and trace essential oils. There are no synthetic perfumes, drying alcohols, harsh ingredients, or known irritants used in any of our products. Our gentle oils have been the favorites of many customers with sensitive skin!

While our Anti-Aging Face Oil (Night) is formulated to absorb quickly into the skin, it does contain sea buckthorn oil, which imparts an orange color to the product. This natural hue may transfer to fabrics if the oil is not fully absorbed before contact.

The benefits of sea buckthorn oil are too impressive for us to compromise on its inclusion in our formula. By applying a modest amount and allowing it ample time to absorb, you can minimize the risk of staining.

For all other oils, simply ensure they fully absorb into your skin or hair before dressing, and you shouldn't experience any color transfer to bedding or clothes.

Our oils last 12 months after opening, and 24 months on the shelf. We have included Vitamin E (Tocopherol) in our products, which is not only nourishing, but helps reduce the rate of oxidation in the product!

Please remember to store our products in a cool, dark area away from light in order to extend shelf life. If you detect any changes in smell, it may have oxidized.

Face oils

Not at all. At Velvette, we researched, analyzed, and tested over 200 different plant oils to find perfect combinations that absorbed quickly and left the skin feeling velvety soft.

We have three different types of face oils: Clarifying, Calming & Anti-Aging.

Clarifying: For oily or combination skin types looking to balance and regulate their sebum production.

Calming: For dry or sensitive skin types to soothe inflammation, irritation and skin dryness.

Anti-Aging: For dehydrated skin types showing signs of aging, our richest, youth preserving series aims to nourish and protect the skin from free radicals.

When designing Velvette's face oils, we made sure to only use ingredients that were low on the comedogenic scale - Meaning they are unlikely to clog your pores! In fact, our Clarifying Face Oil series contain ingredients known to regulate and balance your skin's sebum, and were created specifically for those with oily, blemish prone skin.

Your skin produces different levels of oil (sebum) throughout the day, with sebum levels peaking during the mid-day. Your skin cells also regenerate (cell mitosis) at different rates throughout the day, with the peak around nighttime during sleep.

We have optimized our oils to match your differing sebum levels by creating a lighter formula for the daytime, and a richer formula at night. During the day, we've created an oil that blends well with your existing sebum, whereas at night, an oil that works to replenish lost sebum!

Our daytime oil contains ingredients that provide more barrier functions to help protect your skin from the effects of the elements, whereas our nighttime oil contains powerful and effective extracts and ingredients that take advantage of your skin's peak repair and recovery period at night.

Choosing between our day or night face oil really depends on your personal routine and skincare priorities. Ideally, using both oils in tandem will yield the best results, but we understand that sometimes you may want to start with just one.

Consider what your skin needs most. If protecting your skin from daily environmental factors like sun and wind is a priority, or if you notice your skin tends to dry out during the day, our day face oil might be the best place to start. It's designed to blend seamlessly with your skin's natural oils and helps lock in moisture.

On the other hand, if you're focused on long-term skin repair and nourishment, our night face oil could be the right choice. It's enriched with potent extracts that work overnight to rejuvenate your skin, helping you wake up with a more restored complexion.

To make the decision easier, we recommend trying the Velvette Collection Discovery Kit. This way, you can experience both oils and see which one aligns best with your skin's needs and your personal routine.

You're welcome to use our face oil by itself - many of our customers enjoy the benefits of the oil on its own. However, if you prefer a multi-step skincare routine or if you feel the oil alone doesn't provide sufficient moisture for your skin, the face oil can serve as an excellent final step to lock in hydration from other products.

For those who prefer layering skincare, we suggest applying any water-based products before the oil. Check the ingredients list for water or water-based extracts (like aloe or hydrosols) listed at the beginning. These types of products are excellent for hydrating the skin cells initially. After your skin is plumped and hydrated with these, applying the face oil can effectively seal in that moisture. Remember, oils are best at trapping moisture in the skin. If your skin is very dry, it's crucial to hydrate it first for the best results.

Absolutely, sunscreen is a must during the day, even when using our face oil. Always apply sunscreen over the face oil to ensure you're protected from UV rays.

As for makeup, it should be applied after both sunscreen and oil. This layering ensures your skin is nourished, protected, and ready for makeup, enhancing your natural glow. In fact, our face oils have been used by several renowned makeup artists in film, attesting to their quality and efficacy in achieving camera-ready skin!

Yes! Our daytime face oils absorb quickly into the skin, and will create a smooth, supple base for makeup.

Many makeup artists currently use our Day Face Oils under their clients' makeup, including Candice Ornstein, the Emmy nominated makeup artist for the popular TV show Schitt's Creek, and Kristen Arnett, a celebrity makeup artist and green beauty advocate!

We recommend using our oils as the last step since they can act as a breathable film to seal in the water content from your skin, and also from any other skincare products you use in your routine (which are likely water-based).

There's no harm in using the oils as the first step either as they will absorb quickly into your skin and will work just fine in any order. However, using them as the last step helps to optimize the effectiveness of their moisturizing ability.

Joyce, our in-house Cosmetic Chemist founder wrote an article that goes into more detail about how to layer on skincare products that you can visit here!

If you have mature skin, you're in the right place! Our Anti-Aging Face Oils have been used extensively by hundreds of customers, most of whom are over 50! The success stories from our customers speak volumes about our Anti-Aging Face Oil series' effectiveness on mature skin types.

If you are uncertain whether or not our oils will work for you, we offer a 60-day money-back guarantee so you can return them risk free!

Body Oil

When designing Velvette's body oil, we made sure to only use ingredients that were low on the comedogenic scale - Meaning they are unlikely to clog your pores!

Bacne can be caused by a variety of factors, and our oils are mostly likely not to be the culprit.

Hair Oil

Most commercial hair oils consist of 70-90% silicones, and often less than 5% are actual plant oils! Silicones are a plasticky, man-made lubricant that contains no nutritional value, and leaves hair feeling gunky and limp. Ever feel like the longer you use certain commercial hair products, the more weighed down your hair feels? It could be due to silicone build-up! Silicone is not water soluble so it's hard to wash our completely.

Silicone is much cheaper than plant oils, and certain kinds evaporate quickly, leaving the illusion of a dry finish.

Our hair oil is 100% plant oil! It's super concentrated, so you only need one to four drops per application. To put that into perspective, you'd have 10x or more the amount if you were using silicone based hair oils instead. Think of how much you'd save on your skincare if you switched to oils instead!

Our hair oil is made of 100% plant oils, and 0% silicones!

Exfoliating Mitt

Our Exfoliating Mitts are finely knit in a special way that effectively grips onto dead skin and rolls it off painlessly! If at any point you feel pain, you're rubbing too hard. Rub firmly, not aggressively!

It's completely normal if you're not seeing visible skin rubbing off when using the exfoliating mitt. Everyone's skin reacts differently, and not everyone experiences visible peeling or flaking during exfoliation.

Rest assured, even if you're not seeing it, the exfoliating mitt is still effectively sloughing away dead skin cells and promoting skin renewal.

There are various factors that can affect the visibility of skin shedding, such as skin type, hydration levels, and the amount of dead skin present.

Additionally, the exfoliating action might be more subtle but still effective, leaving your skin smoother and rejuvenated. So, even if you're not seeing it, trust that your skin is benefiting from the exfoliating process.

After exfoliating with our mitt, you've sloughed off layers of dead skin cells, revealing fresh and smooth skin. However, this new skin is also more vulnerable and sensitive, which is why we recommend applying a moisturizer like our Essential Body Oil to nourish the skin. Removing the outer layer of dead skin cells allows the body oil to be absorbed even more quickly and deeply, leaving the skin feeling incredibly soft and supple.

If you have sensitive skin, make sure to patch test first to ensure you are using an appropriate amount of pressure for your skin. Some redness is normal during the scrubbing process, but it should subside quickly within minutes of scrubbing.

Avoid rubbing on any open wounds, and only scrub once the wound has healed fully.

After you are done exfoliating, wash the mitt with soap and water. These mitts shrink once they get wet, so it's important to stretch them into shape before hanging dry.

We recommend replacing your mitts after 10 weeks. Due to the fine and intricate knitting structure of the fibers, the mitt may lose efficacy over time. For hygienic reasons, it's also difficult to fully wash away 10 weeks of accumulated dead skin from the mitt.

First, cut the elastic band off. Then, place the fabric part of the exfoliating mitt in the compost bin, and the elastic band in the garbage bin. The outer packaging is made of paper, and can be recycled.

Gua Sha

Gua Sha, an ancient Chinese beauty ritual, has stood the test of time for its remarkable ability to sculpt, lift, and rejuvenate the face.

This technique involves gently scraping a smooth-edged tool across the skin, promoting circulation and stimulating the body's natural healing processes.

By encouraging lymphatic drainage and reducing puffiness, Gua Sha helps to sculpt facial contours, diminish fine lines, and restore a radiant complexion.

More than just a skincare routine, it's a holistic practice that nurtures both inner and outer beauty, leaving you feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, and in harmony with your skin.

Each Gua Sha plate is crafted from the opulent Bian stone, which formed over 65 million years ago when a meteor collided with a mountain in ancient China.

This extraordinary stone, known for its dense composition of over 40 minerals and trace elements, has been revered since antiquity for its remarkable properties.

The use of Bian stone as a healing technique dates back to the 3rd millennium BCE. Bian stone therapy is one of the first of four techniques in Huang Di Nei Jing (黃帝內經), the most important ancient text that has been treated as a fundamental doctrine source for Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Bian stone's historical significance lies not only in its age but also in its ability to emit ultrasonic pulses, far-infrared waves, and negative ions. These natural phenomena, recognized for their anti-aging and health benefits, have been harnessed by generations past for healing and rejuvenation.

The tutorial video is a good guideline on some ways you can use the Gua Sha, but there's no set routine. Do what feels right for you, and feel free to share what works for you with us!

Using a face oil with Gua Sha serves several important purposes. Firstly, applying a face oil before using the Gua Sha tool reduces friction during the scraping motion, preventing unnecessary tugging or pulling on the skin. This helps ensure a smoother and more comfortable experience. Additionally, the presence of the face oil allows the Gua Sha tool to glide more effortlessly across the skin, facilitating a more fluid and effective movement.

Moreover, combining Gua Sha with face oils enhances the penetration of the oil's nourishing ingredients into the skin. The scraping action of the Gua Sha tool promotes better circulation and lymphatic drainage, which in turn helps to improve the absorption of the face oil's moisturizing and rejuvenating properties. This synergistic approach not only boosts hydration but also promotes healthier, more radiant-looking skin.

Scrape at a 45 degree angle for best results.

Use just enough pressure to feel relief, but not so much that you leave marks all over your skin. The scraping motion will leave your skin a bit red and flushed due to the increased circulation, but it should subside within minutes.

Avoid scraping over any open wounds, and only scrape once the wound has healed fully.

This is all up to you! Some people use the Gua Sha only a few seconds a day to massage a few trouble spots, and some people like to use it for long thirty minute massage sessions.

Yes! Our Gua Sha come with a reusable velvet pouch bag.

After you are done your massage, wash the Gua Sha with soap and water, and dry it off with a towel. Place the Gua Sha back in the velvet pouch that it came with and store in a safe place.

Do not use your Gua Sha if it is chipped or broken. Our Gua Sha is made of delicate Bian Stone, so take care not to drop it on hard surfaces and always store it in the velvet protective pouch that it came with when not in use.

If your Gua Sha arrived damage, please contact us as soon as possible at info@lovevelvette.com, and we'd be more than happy to replace it for you!
